For even the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve...

Mark 10:45

Dedicating your time to serving at church has strategic impact on someone's eternal life. It is in a local church where a person could be made brand new and become redeemed. In the Book of James, there's a substantial focus on the relationship between Faith and Works. We aren't required to perform good deeds (like volunteering time or assisting those in need) to attain salvation; rather, we engage in good works as a reflection of our salvation! Our actions can demonstrate our faith (James 2:18). James emphasizes that faith without corresponding deeds is ineffective. Therefore, if we profess salvation through Jesus' sacrifice, our actions should validate that claim. One way to exemplify this is through volunteering at church.

James unequivocally asserts that we are called to action. Yet, here are three additional reasons why volunteering at church is beneficial:

Serving Others Equates to Serving God: When we volunteer at church, we serve others—welcoming, teaching, and demonstrating love. In doing so, we ultimately serve God. Jesus affirms in Matthew 25:40, "The King will reply, 'Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.'" Thus, when we engage in church volunteering, our efforts are directed towards God.

Serving is Greater than Being Served: Jesus Himself proclaimed in Matthew 20:28, "For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many." Jesus epitomized selfless service. Despite being divine, He humbled Himself to serve humanity. In John 13, Jesus exemplifies this by washing His disciples' feet, setting a profound example of servanthood. Attending church extends beyond listening to sermons and singing songs; it encompasses serving others. Volunteering allows us to follow Jesus' example of serving.

Utilize Your Gifts: Peter, in his epistle to early Christians, mentions, "God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve others" (1 Peter 4:10). As believers, God has endowed us with distinct and diverse gifts. Some excel in hospitality, finding joy in making others feel welcomed and valued. Volunteering on the Love Team aligns perfectly with this gift, greeting and accommodating guests at church. Others may possess the gift of teaching, which can be channeled into leading Bible studies or classes for children, youth or bible college. Embrace the unique gifts God has bestowed upon you by volunteering at church.
